Dhaka University LL.M Lawyers Association was formed in 2003 not as an alumni association but as a professional body with objectives to provide a platform and a united front for the members to identify, discuss and share common interests, ideas and problems and to encourage and foster mutual assistance and support. Membership is limited only for the lawyers who are practicing before the Bangladesh Supreme court and have membership of Bangladesh Supreme court Bar Association. It is strictly a professional body.
Dhaka University, popularly known as "the Oxford of the East", was established in the first day of July, 1921 under the Government of India Act XVIII of 1920 (which was based on the recommendations of the Calcutta University Commission presided over by Sir Michael Sadler) and commenced its academic activities with three Faculties - Science, Arts and Law. The Faculty of Law since then has been the pioneer in legal education of Bangladesh.
Establishment of Dhaka University is probably one of the most important events for the development of the political and cultural history of the land. Dhaka University assumed a special role in the Language Movement of 1952 and ultimately in the nation building with the emergence of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in 1971. Students , teachers and employees of the University sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country.
After independence, the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh promulgated the adaptation of laws relating to the Universities by the Bangladesh Ordinance No. 1 of 1972. Afterwards, pursuant to the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, the President’s Order No. 11 of 1973 was promulgated - which is termed as the Dacca University Order, 1973.
Until 1973, the Faculty of Law offered a two-year LL.B. Programme in the evening. During the 1973-1974 session, it introduced a three-year LL.B. Honours course. This course was subsequently extended to four years from 1977-1978 session. During the 1976-1977 session, a one year general LL.M. course was introduced. During 2006-2007 session, specialized LL.M. courses were launched.
After obtaining their degrees, the students of LL.M. of Dhaka University came forward to contribute in the legal field of Bangladesh. Their needs and aspirations resulted in the Dhaka University LL.M. Lawyer’s Association. This is a family of friends and professionals, all geared to achieve the same objectives with same aspirations.
